Cycle Ship Shimanami:
A ship designed to combine bicycles and boats
Shimana-mi is a scenic destination for cyclists worldwide! Cyclists who have experienced the Setouchi Shimanami Kaido, considered a sacred place, have expressed a desire to view the beautiful islands and bridges from aboard a ship, and to ride the Yumeshima and Tobishima Kaidos as well.
The Cycle Ship Shimanami has set sail to answer the desire for island hopping, combining bicycles and boats! The ship travels across the Kurushima Strait, one of Japan's three most powerful currents, as well as the islands of the Yumeshima and Akinada Tobishima Kaidos, and crisscrosses the Seto Inland Sea from Iwakuni (Yamaguchi), Miyajima (Hiroshima), and Mizushima (Okayama). While the Cycle Ship Shimanami is friendly to both bicycles and cyclists, its mission is not limited to speedy transport to destination ports.
"As we sail through the Seto Inland Sea, I want cyclists on board to enjoy not only the beautiful scenery of the many islands, the rapid currents, the whirlpools, the white sand and green pines, but also the majestic bridge, the shipyard cranes, the ships under construction, the cargo ships and ferries passing by, and other scenes interwoven with human activity. I also consider it an important role to help create memorable trips," says the captain.
And that's no surprise, as the Cycle Ship Shimanami's voyage is managed by Shimanami Co., Ltd. This local company, which plans and operates experiential sightseeing boat cruises in the Kurushima Strait, where the currents can reach speeds of up to 10 knots (approximately 18 km/h), has earned it acclaim from both domestic and international tourists. Under the safe stewardship of a captain who knows the Seto Inland Sea inside and out, this Seto Inland Sea cruise is an experience you can only get on the Cycle Ship Shimanami. The dream of island hopping by bicycle and boat comes true.

The powerful currents seem like they could reach out and touch you
